Music in Exile, WAT Artists, Creative Victoria & the Australia Council for the Arts present: Gordon Koang Unity Tour 2022
After the covid-cancellation of Gordon Koang’s 2021 national tour, Music in Exile is proud to announce rescheduled dates for 2022 in celebration of his acclaimed eleventh album, ‘Unity’.
Released mid-2020, ‘Unity’ captures Gordan’s unparalleled and unwavering positivity. Featuring singles, ‘Asylum Seeker’, ‘Stand Up (Clap Your Hands)’ and ‘South Sudan’, statements of peace, love, and togetherness are prominent messages throughout Gordon’s impressive discography.
The positivity present in Gordon’s music brings people together — strangers join in unison on the dancefloor to groove to his catchy melodies, and there is a deep feeling of connection in the collective hope that one feels when listening to his songs. Gordon’s music and his ability to articulate innately human sentiments have resonated with audiences globally.
Joining Gordon Koang for this show will be Music in Exile label mates Chikchika as part of their ‘Abichu’ Tour across Victoria. Chikchika are a Melbourne-based band 4 piece band, with three of its members hailing from the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Renowned for their songs about love, distance, separation and culture, Chikchika is fronted by celebrated Oromo singer Muluu Baqqalaa.
Accompanying Muluu on vocals are the traditional East-African instruments of the krar (5-string lyre) and masinko (single string violin) played by Anbessa Gebrehiwot and Haftu Reda, respectively.
Percussion, drums and bass, as played by Dale Gorfinkel, infuse the music with hypnotic grooves that embrace new sonic territories, bringing a contemporary edge to the traditional composition.
